Effect of Training system and Planting Density onYield and Fruit Quality of Wine Grapes

Abstract
Two training systems (Open Lyre and Kniffm) with two planting densities (3.3m¡¿1.5¡1.1m and 1.8m¡¿1.5¡1.1m, R¡¿V, respectively) were evaluated for their effects ongrowth, yield and fruit quality of 14 grapes (Riesling, Ugni Blanc, Se¢¥millon, Chardonnay, Clairette, Muscat de Frontignan, Chenin Blanc, SV 5-276, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Carignane, Merlot, Perdea) grafted on SO4. Fruit yields averaged 443.1 §¸/10a in 1988, 726.5 §¸/10a in 1989, 483.7 §¸/10a in 1990, and 3-year average yield was 551.1 §¸/10a. Yields of Open Lyre System were more productive than Kniffin System. With Kniffin System, dense planting increased the yield while the trend was reversed with Open Lyre system. Carignane, SV 5-276, Pinot Noir, Semillon, and Ugni Blanc grapes were more productive while Muscat de Frontignan, Riesling, Grenache grapes were less productive. Soluble solids content of Open Lyre System was higher than Kniffin System. SV 5-276, Merlot, Chardonnay, Clairette grapes were high in soluble solids while Carignane, Riesling, and Perdea grapes were low. Acidity of Kniffin System was higher than Open Lyre System. Ugni Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carignane were evaluated as acid grapes while acidity of Semillon and SV 5-276 grapes was low.
